| The Most Risky Drivers... Teenagers |
A recent newspaper article quoting the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration presents some interesting statistics:
- The 2000 accident rate for all 16 year old drivers was 193 per 1000 drivers. Girls were 175 per 1000 and boys were 210 per 1000. Girls have actually increased since 1990 by 9%with boys down only slightly.
- The accident rates in 2000 for 19 year olds were 38 percent lower than 16 year olds, 120 per 1000.
- Traffic accidents were the leading cause of death for teens 16 to 19 in 2000, with 5600 killed. Two-thirds were boys.
- Insurance industry statistics show girls 16 to 19 are driving 70 percent more than in 1975, averaging 6,870 miles a year and boys the same age are driving 16 percent more, averaging 8,200 miles a year.
- The cost to insure teen daughters has risen so that the difference has fallen to 59 percent of what is charged for teen boys from 39 percent in 1985.
So if you are soon to add a teenage driver or have them currently in your household and wonder why you are being charged so much… That very first year of driving, boys or girls, is very dangerous, but it does get better and better with experience.
